At its most basic level, photography is about light, shadow, subject and composition. It’s the photographer’s job to bring these elements together to preserve a moment in time, and when successful, draw the viewer into the captured image.

I’ve been making photographs for a half century. Based on Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000 hour rule, I should be a Zen master photographer but we all know such a thing doesn’t exist. Each time I walk out the door with my camera is a new day with an unknown world to discover, and that is the beauty of photography.

Photographers don’t start with a blank canvas. We’re observers. We view a scene and wait for the elements to align. Most of the time we fail. But when we succeed, it makes all those misfires seem irrelevant. They say it’s all about the journey, not the destination and I couldn’t agree more.

This collection of photographs represents how I see the world.
